
SOUTH MORANG – The Khalsa Education Society in conjuction with the City of Whittlesea organised a Sikh Awareness session to local service providers, early year educators and representatives of local organisations.
The session was organised at the office of City of Whittlesea Council in South Morang on 13th Feb 2019. A number of local agencies including members of Victoria Police, Schools, Whittlesea Community Connections, Yarra Valley Water attended this event.
The City of Whittlesea has seen a huge growth of the Sikh population during last census and thereby the idea of this session was to broaden community awareness by starting positive conversations about Sikhs.
There was a Sikh awareness presentation delivered by Gurinder Kaur, during this session elaborating various aspects of Sikh history, life-style, language, Khalsa, identity, turban, dress code and the relevant community sensitive issues. A turban tying demonstration was also conducted to educate the audience about the Sikh turban. Gurdwara Sahib Craigieburn Music Teacher Bhai Satnam Singh alongwith Prabhnoor Singh also performed a musical presentation using Taus and Tabla.
A question answer session was also held towards the end of the presentation to clarify a number of questions of the attendees. The QA session was also an opportunity to create dialogue between Sikhs and government officials to address concerns.
The attendees provided a great positive feedback at the end of the session confirming that the session helped them to have a better understanding of the Sikhs and their turban now.
